Personal injury and the effects of a traumatic brain injury

A few weeks ago, this blog we discussed the costs associated with treating a spinal cord injury. While a spinal cord injury can certainly be catastrophic and life-altering, it is not the only type of harm that can completely upend a Californian's well-being. Traumatic brain injuries can also have a profound impact on an individual's life, requiring him or her to completely change the way he or she lives.

To start, a traumatic brain injury can cause significant damage to one's motor functions. A TBI sufferer may have trouble walking or controlling his or her limbs, vision can become troublesome and even identifying objects by touch can become difficult. These deficits can make what were once simple activities like getting dressed challenging or impossible.

Serious damage can be caused to one's cognitive and emotional functioning, too. Concentration and memory can be diminished, and even maintaining social relationships can become difficult. Sadly, this often leaves TBI sufferers isolated which, in turn, can lead to other mental health conditions like depression. Taken as a whole, these losses can render an individual unable to succeed at school, work and everyday tasks.

In addition to these life-altering effects, traumatic brain injury victims also usually need extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation in order to reclaim as much of their lives as possible. This can be quite expensive, thereby threatening an individual or family's financial stability. Fortunately, if a brain injury was caused by the negligence of another, whether through a car accident, a slip-and-fall, or negligence in the workplace, then a victim may be able to pursue a personal injury lawsuit. If he or she does, and is successful, then compensation may be awarded for these damages. While such a recovery may undo all of his or her physical, cognitive and emotional losses, it can provide the financial stability needed to allow a victim and his or her family to focus on what really matters: reclaiming as much of one's former life as possible.
