A herniated disc can be a painful personal injury

A car accident or slip-and-fall incident can leave an individual with serious injuries. Some people in California are lucky to escape these matters with nothing more than scrapes and bruises, but others are left with serious harm. While brain and spinal cord injuries are amongst the most severe, there is a long list of injuries that fall somewhere in the middle of the injury severity spectrum.

Amongst these moderate injuries are herniated discs. The vertebrae of the spine are sandwiched between cushions that are filled with a softer fluid-like substance. These "discs" are meant to cushion the strain placed on the spine. At times, though, these discs can rupture causing the jelly-like substance to push out of the disc.

The symptoms of a herniated disc can be quite painful. A victim can experience arm and leg pain, numbness, tingling and muscle weakness. These symptoms can become so severe that they affect everyday living, including one's ability to work and earn a living wage. It can also lead to bowel and bladder issues. The pain felt by an individual with a herniated disc can be long-lasting, too.

Although the pain associated with many herniated discs can be treated with medication, some serious cases require surgical treatment. Either way, medical expenses can quickly accumulate, leaving an individual with serious financial losses associated with their injuries. It can be challenging and stressful to try to make ends meet when these unexpected expenses are suddenly thrust upon an individual, but financial relief may be available if the injuries in question were caused by the negligence of another.

By pursuing a personal injury lawsuit, these individuals may be able to recover compensation for the damages inflicted upon them. These damages may include lost wages, medical expenses and pain and suffering. Proving negligence isn't always easy, though, which is why many choose to work closely with a qualified legal professional when pursuing one of these claims.
